King Francis I reigned from 1515 until his death in 1547. His sworn enemy was the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and much of his reign was dominated by the Italian Wars. Though he had early success in these wars, routing the Papal States and their allies in 1516, he later suffered his most stunning defeat at the Battle of Pavia in 1525 where he was captured and held until ceding claims on Italy and Burgundy. At Pavia he led a combined force of 24,000 French, 6,000 Swiss, and 50 Cannon but was soundly defeated by the less numerous German Landsknechts. Pavia is often described as the end of the lance armed armored heavy cavalry charge as their effectiveness against pike blocks was severely limited. We have presented King Francis with his Noble Mounted Knights setup to charge his enemies as he did on that fateful day at Pavia.
